Growing up in rural North Carolina, Tiky Swain, D.D.S. ’06, like most children and teenagers, didn’t dwell much on how many dentists were employed locally or how many of her friends may or may not regularly visit the dentist. It wasn’t until she began her dental training at UNC that she realized how limited oral care was in some parts of North Carolina.
“Dental school opened up my eyes to the access to care issues here in North Carolina,” said Swain. “It wasn’t until I realized how much care wasn’t being delivered that I realized how much I wanted to help those who didn’t have access. That’s when I realized how much I wanted to do my part to create a healthy
community, a healthier North Carolina.”
